In Kindergarten we are continuing to learn about the life cycle of insects. Now that the weather is nice, we are watching caterpillars (larva) in their wonderful transformation into Painted Lady Butterflies. These caterpillars have wrapped themselves in a chrysalis (they are in their pupa stage). I moved the chrysalides from their cup into the butterfly inclosure. They will stay there until they emerge from their chrysalides as butterflies!

The Turtle Cam is still temporarily transformed into a Caterpillar Cam. Check out the chrysalides on the camera at home!

Great turn out for Earth Day T-shirts! Everyone who purchased a shirt wore it on Monday and showed how the ECC can "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle"!

In class to celebrate Earth Day, we created pine cone bird feeders using pine cones, crisco, and bird seed! The students were able to take them home to hand them up on a branch and give back to our Earth!

While our caterpillars are going through their transformation, we will be using the Turtle Cam to keep watch on them!

Kindergarten planted Marigold Seeds in cups today. Everyone had the chance to scoop up some soil, make a little hole, put their seeds in, cover them up... and wait for them to grow!

We are also learning about the life cycle of a plant. Plants start as seeds and they need soil, water, sunlight, and air to live. Our plants have sprouted and have leaves! They will soon be growing

We will be sending these plants home for Mother's Day!

Wow, did this blog ever get away from me! I am going to make sure that I post what we are doing every week till the end of school (thats only 5 weeks away!)

Let me catch you up on what we've been up to in Kindergarten lately!

We are currently growing Marigolds in our classroom, each student has a plant that they are observing and measuring each time they have class.
We also have caterpillars! They will become Painted Lady Butterflies, but for right now they are just a cup of fuzzy caterpillars. These caterpillars spend most of their time eating, getting bigger till they will crawl to the top of the cup and become chrysalises!

This week we continued with our weather unit. We are becoming expert "Weather Watchers"! We keep track of our daily weather on a chart and research the temperature and forecast.

In Kindergarten we learned about clouds and the shapes they have. Look for our Cloud Shapes project hanging in the hallway soon! (Template courtesy of Made for 1st Grade Blog)

We played a fun game called "Fly Swatter" where the students competed to SWAT the word on the wall first. I would say a phrase like, "swat the season where the weather is hot" and the first person to swat the correct word would get a point for their team.

Mrs. Haab's Class Spotlight:
Kid Quotes of what we learned this week!

"We learned how we can go outside to tell what the weather is"
"You can watch the news to learn about the weather"
"Clouds have different shapes"
"Clouds can look like chairs and cats"
**Next week's Web Spotlight is... Mr. Painter's Class!

We also had an unexpected surprise this morning, Ronald McDonald came to visit our school and teach us the importance of staying active and healthy.
-
One of Mr. Painter's students was able to be his magician's assistant and we even learned a new dance!

"March comes in like a lion, and goes out like a lamb"

With the wonderful weather that we've had to kick start the month of March, I thought that it was perfect time to begin our Seasons & Weather unit!

Throughout this unit we will...
  • Keep track of our daily weather and temperature using our bulletin board
  • Learn how our seasons change throughout the year
  • Discuss the changes in weather and nature that comes with that seasonal change.

I have gotten off track with my class spotlight's recently, so let's start that back up! This week's Web Spotlight will be... Mrs. Haab's class!

Our Seasons & Weather unit aligns with Kindergarten Science Standards...

SC.K:4-3 Name the daily weather.
SC.K:4-4 Describe the changes in nature throughout the year.
SC.K:4-5 Name the four seasons in order.
SC.K:5-4 Describe the different characteristics of the seasons.

We will be collecting orders up until March 1st, so please submit your order form and payment to your classroom teacher or in the office.

Please leave a comment on this post if you have any questions!

**I sent home an order form with each student, but attached below is the Earth Day t-shirt order form.

Today in celebration of Valentine's Day, three of my Kindergarten classes created Valen-Slime (Thanks to Mama Papa Bubba Blog for the idea). We watched as the slime took form, observed with our senses, and then each student got to take some Valen-Slime home!

Valen-Slime Recipe (Makes about 20 fist-size servings)

Ingredients:
Glue Mixture
  • 3 cups white glue
  • 2 ¼ cups hot water
  • Food coloring

Instructions:
Borax Mixture
  • 1 ½ cups hot water
  • 3 ½ tablespoons Borax
Picture
  1. Put 3 cups of white glue into a bowl
  2. Pour 2 1/4 cups hot water over glue and add the food coloring of your choice

Enjoy! Use your senses to explore (but do not use your sense of taste!)

**If planning to store in a bag, add some of the leftover liquid from the bowl into the bag with your Valen-Slime!

This week we will be learning about President's Day, the celebration of George Washington's birthday. George Washington was our first president and a very special person in our history. We also can take this time to learn about Abraham Lincoln because his birthday falls so close to Washington's (February 12th).

In addition to learning about these special Americans, we will also be doing a President's Day craft (Thanks to The First Grade Parade for this great idea!).

Here is an example that I created on my iPad, but my students will be creating their own paper plate George Washington or Abraham Lincoln, complete with hat and wig or beard!
